14:45 - 15:20 Working With the OSGeo Community Welcome to the Open Source Geospatial Foundation, this presentation is on how we actually get work done as volunteers. This presentation covers the “lay of the land” introducing our committees, local chapters and projects and describes how each one is organized. More importantly we will look at how each group makes decisions, from the scruffy friendly system administration team who handle your infrastructure requests, to the OSGeo board making final calls on budgets and funding. Finally we will introduce your guides (by name with pictures) the foundation... Working With the OSGeo Community My Schedule Please sign in to add a session to your schedule. Provide Feedback State of GeoWebCache GeoWebCache is a successful OSGeo community project used in GeoServer and GeoNode. Did you also know can be run on its own though? This presentation introduces the GeoWebCache application, the functionality it offers, and how the project is enjoying recent success. This introduction will compare GeoWebCache as a stand alone application to GeoWebCache as a component of GeoServer. We are also excited to share new functionality, and introduce new developers who have joined our team in the past year. Provide Feedback Glacier surface velocities from point clouds using an open-source toolchain An understanding of outlet glacier dynamics is crucial for understanding the mass-balance of the Greenland Ice Sheet and how changes to the Ice Sheet will affect sea level rise. Measurements of outlet glacier velocities are crucial for driving and validating outlet glacier dynamics models and understanding the processes that influence glacier advance and retreat. The Helheim Glacier in southeast Greenland is one of the fast-moving glaciers in Greenland, and is a crucial study site for outlet glacier dynamics. Since 2015, we have used an autonomous terrestrial LiDAR scanner (A-TLS) situated... 15:30 - 16:05 National Treasure OSGeo is made up of projects and chapters. The projects deliver great software and develop solutions to geospatial questions. The local and national chapters support the OSGeo community in specific geographic regions. Chapters support adoption efforts, commercial efforts and other regional community events. The USA is in need of more and coordinated chapters. This became clear to me while organizing FOSS4G Boston 2017. Open Source Geospatial Technology has great value within government, business, and non-profit sectors as well as in the business intelligence, big data, and IoT... Provide Feedback Gerrymandering and Geospatial Analysis of Redistricting Plans Gerrymandering is a growing national concern. Prior to the 1960s, Congressional districts often respected county and municipal boundaries, but wildly differing populations among districts led to the establishment of the one person, one vote standard. In an effort to conform to the requirements of one person, one vote, Congressional districts became increasingly less compact, and increasingly more gerrymandered. With cheaper computing power and the increasing adoption of GIST, the redistrictings implemented by several states following the 2000 and 2010 censuses fare poorly on measures of... Provide Feedback How Denver Public Schools uses FOSS4G Denver Public Schools utilizes open source geospatial software to manage the spatial data that contributes to the planning and analysis of the District, as well as feeding to and from the student enterprise to enable business intelligence applications throughout the enterprise. FOSS4G technology not only enables more accurate maintenance and speedy analysis, as well as richer cartographic and visual products, but also gives non-GIS analysts access to spatial data and tools they would not have otherwise. This talk will discuss the back-end PostGIS databases, examples of... How Denver Public Schools uses FOSS4G My Schedule Please sign in to add a session to your schedule. Provide Feedback Endangered Plant Site Probability Analysis for UAS Flight Planning Conservation organizations must locate populations of endangered species in order to monitor their welfare. Accurate endangered species surveys are an important part of site assessments used when acquiring development permits. However, traditional methods of surveying endangered species locations are time and resource intensive and are subject to an individual’s interpretation. Additionally, habitat studies often lack a geospatial analysis component. Greater efficiency in the endangered species mapping can be achieved by analyzing its’ habitat characteristics and creating a... Provide Feedback Using OpenStreetMap data in QGIS Over the years, OpenStreetMap (OSM) has established itself as the most complete global dataset of road data, as well as a great source for other features like building outlines and points of interest. Its open data license has allowed third-party developers to create numerous tools for extracting, processing, and repackaging OSM data in a variety of formats. But with so many options, it can be difficult to keep up as new tools are created, and others are retired. This talk will give an overview of the many different ways to acquire and use OSM data within QGIS. We'll explore... 17:15 - 17:50 Building an OS business case for endusers. Still many decision makers in both profit and non-profit organizations need to be convinced of the business value of open source. Building a comprehensive business case is the usual way to go. However, what are its ingredients and how to quantify these? And above all, which type of stakeholder is convinced by which specific argument? Therefore insight is required in how open source adoption translates into (in)direct monetary as well as intangible value to user organizations. Attendees will gain insight in building the argument and business case for OS adoption to convince the many... Building an OS business case for endusers.
