FireCARES - An open source GIS application for analyzing fire risk

Session details
Session Type:
Experience level:

When fire department resources are deployed to match the risk levels inherent to hazards in the community, it has been scientifically demonstrated that the community will be far less vulnerable to negative outcomes in firefighter injury and death, civilian injury and death, and property loss. The Fire Community Assessment and Risk Evaluation System (FireCARES) is an open source GIS web application that analyzes fire service data to ensure fire department resources are appropriately deployed to match a community’s risk and compare the performance of similar fire departments.  FireCARES is Department of Homeland Security (DHS) grant funded through the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) and actively used by hundreds of fire departments across the United States and has garnered significant interest from fire departments in other countries as well.

This presentation will cover how various open source GIS tools including PostGIS, Leaflet, and GeoDjango are used to analyze large datasets and to identify community risk and articulate each Fire Department’s ability to respond to that risk.
