FOSS4G at University of Colorado - Denver

This past fall semester the University of Colorado Denver Department of Geography and  Environmental Sciences created the  Free Open Source Software for Geospatial Certificate as an additional offering to the variety of degree programs currently being offered. Free Open Source Software  is used in a variety of classes through the Geography and Environmental Science Department from Introduction to Free Open Source Software to Geospatial Statistics. In addition  the FOSS4G Lab  founded by Dr. Rafael Moreno Sanchez; has helped create a forum for workshops and activities that creates a welcoming environment for learning Free Open Source Software including QGIS, PostGIS and R in addition; these open source applications  have slowly been integrated into a variety of other classes throughout the curriculum.  Coupled with students who feel passionate about FOSS4G; various Maptime events happen on campus that bridge the gap between academia and the geospatial community and exposes students to Free Open Source Software. This workshop will showcase how Free Open Source Software can be integrated more fully into your geography department; what benefits does using FOSS4G software bring to students and how to create a space for both Open and Proprietary software.
