TOWARDS THE DEVELOPMENT OF CROWDSOURCE BATHYMETRIC MAPPING PLATFORM

ABSTRACT:
Bathymetry databases are important for many applications such as navigation and sea pollution monitoring. But collecting the data and creating a database is not an easy task due to lack of available resources. This paper introduces a crowdsourcing approach for creating a bathymetry database for the Arctic regions of northern Canada. The data will be collected by the crowd and will be uploaded on a web application platform to be processed and formatted with respect to bathymetry data standards. These data will be stored in a geospatial database, will be searchable and accessible, and will be used to create maps of underwater surfaces and seabed. The maps are created automatically after the data are uploaded and will be ready to be used within minutes. This paper introduces the methods for collection of data and preparation of bathymetric maps.
